A bunch of my friends drink energy drinks on a regular basis. One day I remembered reading that energy drinks in excess could cause heart problems. I told them about that but they said it was no problem. Was I in the wrong? I've never actually had an energy drink because I believe they are unhealthy. So is there really anything to worry about? If so, explain.

They are loaded with sodium. Sodium is very very bad for the heart. Sodium is basically found in salt. Heart problems is just the long term effect. If someone drinks too many energy drinks in a short amount of time they could end up in the hospital or even dead. For this reason, the energy drink Redbull was banned from France after an athlete had 4 of them.

Also caffeine

Yes, I think they are not all that they are cracked up to be according to the advertisement campaign. For one they are loaded with caffeine-The focus of the campaign is toward the Generation X crowd to give them that boost needed to get them going in the morning. And some of them misuse them thinking that more is good hence the caffeine and sodium overdose and serious harm to the body which can cause acute conditions such as heart attacks from too much caffeine and sodium.

They are not good for consumption for anybody. They are just an expensive soda in my opinion

Energy drinks are essentially overpriced sodas that are 5x worse for you. I have had two in my lifetime, and to be honest, they aren't very good tasting. I'd much rather have a Dr. Pepper, which, I know, is also unhealthy, but not near as much as say a Volt energy drink. I know lots of kids who think it is "cool" and hip to drink them, partially because it apparently means "ZOMG I HAVV SO MUCH MONIEZ THAT I CAN WAHJST THEMZ ON ENARGY DRINKXZ", and partially because their parents tell them not to drink them.

On both occurrences where I drank an energy drink, I felt bloated, nauseated, and couldn't fall asleep. Sure, I was full of energy and was able to focus on the task at hand, but the side effects were horrible. I never again will drink an energy drink.

I don't think one every now and then is very bad. Maybe two a week max. But having one a day or more? It's just overload. Anything in excess isn't good. Even water. You can literally blow up your insides if you drink too much water. And if you drink too many energy drinks, you'll give yourself a heart attack. It is like eating bottles of ketchup. Just imagine all the sodium in either of them. You would NEVER go around just downing bottles of ketchup. Even if it is like the best thing ever made :)

caffeine is a stimulant and will stimulate the heart to beat faster to much caffeine will cause your heart to beat to fast, in addition to caffeine they add other energy inducing chemicals such as Taurine, Guarana, Ginseng. most are naturally occurring chemicals but taken in excess is never good.

some energy drinks are so powerful they need a health warning on the can, like tobacco products. in general i stay away from, in fact i think i only had 1 ever

Some energy drinks contain up to 300 mg of caffeine, compared with 80 mg for a typical cup of coffee), which can lead to:

  • Increased anxiety and panic attacks
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Insomnia

When I have an exam it happens that I drink a Red Bull. Don't drink it to much though, as blackbird said, it's really not healthy at all!

They're almost certainly unhealthy. A quick glance at the ingredients listed on the back of the can tells you a lot - long words always = unhealthy, right?

I went through a period in the last year where I was almost running entirely on them. I would have one on the way to lectures to perk me up, I'd have one at lunch and then usually a few in the afternoon. It was ridiculous. Then I decided to dump the supermarket brand energy drinks (they were insanely cheap, which isn't really a good sign) and I replaced them with Pro Plus tablets. That was more ridiculous.

Believe me, if you feel tired, it's better to address the cause (diet, amount of sleep a night etc.) than to rely on energy drinks. The odd one is fine, but anymore than that and you should ask yourself why you need it.
