Is it a problem to have airport on and ethernet plugged in?

Nope. :) If it bothers you, I suppose you could disable Airport when you know you're going to be on Ethernet, but otherwise leave it on -- the power drain is likely minimal and in the event you have to give up your Ethernet cord to someone you'll instantly switch to wifi if you've left Airport enabled.

I don't have a desktop computer right now, so I'm typing this on my March 2009 MacBook Pro with Airport enabled but with Ethernet 10/100 plugged in and active. No issues here.

It's not a problem. I always turn mine off just to be safe though, the AirPort that is. Sometimes I have conflicts when I don't, but your mileage may vary.

Nope :) In fact I use both ethernet and Airport at the same time on one of my Macs. I get internet through the airport, and then I share it through ethernet for my older machines.
