Windows XP should ALWAYS be above Windows 7.

LMDE (I prefer the Xfce edition. #1 because it's rolling and based directly on Debian Testing)
Linux Mint Main Edition
Debian Stable (2 & 3 were a real toss-up. I finally decided on Mint being ahead for the numerous repos by default, and better suited for a day-to-day desktop. Debian will never EVER give you problems however.)
Ubuntu (I guess I can't leave them out, but I cannot stand 11.04. 10.04 and 10.10 were really good though)
openSUSE (I'm not really a fan of RPM packaging or Yum, but the openSUSE team consistently makes the best KDE distro available).
Windows 2000 (By far MS's best and most stable OS. I had a 2000 box running for 6 months once without a reboot, and then the reboot was only to apply an update that required it. And it didn't have all the "phone home" DRM crap that modern MS OSes have. RIP)
Puppy Linux (Can't be beat for bringing ancient hardware back to life)
PCLinuxOS (Another really good KDE distro, based on Kubuntu)
FreeDOS (The best way to wax nostalgic with all those old DOS games everybody loves)
MSDOS (Hey, it was the first OS I ever used. It sucked but I loved it and it got me loving computers)

Yeah. It's an opinion-based question, and in my opinion Linux is by far the superior OS right now.

from best to worst

1: Windows ME

2: Windows 95

3: unpatched Windows XP with no service packs installed and connected directly to the internet with no firewall or NAT router

4: Windows vista running on a 700MHz pentium 3 system with 64MB RAM

5: Palm OS 1.0 running in an emulator installed on a computer running windows ME

6: Ubuntu running in a virtual machine on a windows ME system which in turn is running in a virtual machine on a Windows vista system with a pIII CPU and 64MB RAM

7:Windows 3.1 running on a system with an Intel ivy bridge 3960x CPU overclocked to 5GHZ with 32GB RAM and 16 OCZ vertex 3 SSD's running in RAID 0

8: Dos running on a system with the same specs as #7

9: Windows CE

10: Windows 8

I love how all the ridiculous situations (i.e. 3, 4, 5, 6, & 7... well 7 actually doesn't sound all that bad.. lol I get to keep the hardware right?) are all better than Windows 8.

I think this question would be better suited as a Top 5 rather than a Top 10, because many of the given answers are from outdated, virtually useless Operating Systems. Top 5 for me...
