What does the Finder icon represent in Mac OS X?

I think everyone knows the Finder Icon, well, what does it really represent? What does it stand for? Who created it? (not what company [what was the name of the guy?]) -?

It's a face. It could be consider the "personality" of the computer (since Finder gives access to the entire OS)

No, it is actually 2 faces on all together and one on the right of the finder, the light blue/Grey area
