Its been 26 years since Andy Kaufman died, and people are still debating whether or not he's actually gone. If you're not faking your own death for tax, insurance, or other financial reasons, is it (or has it ever been) illegal in the U.S.? |
Yes, it is illegal to fake your own death in the United States. No matter how you slice it, it's fraud, and a felony with prison time attached. |
Dying isn't illegal, but chances are if you fake your own death and succeed you are likely leaving some financial loose ends -- unpaid Federal income taxes, state taxes, business taxes and unpaid debts (car loan, mortgage, rental agreements, etc.) Faking your own death with these issues in existence equals fraud and that's illegal. |
Well, if there's been no murder or damage to anyone while you did that, it's not exactly legal either, but with what would they sue you for? For not seeing you for 10 years? |
Nope it is not illegal if you actually die in the process of faking your own death :) |

Since I'd never heard of him and had to look him up, here's a link to Andy Kaufman in case anyone else is in the same boat: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Kaufman#Death
