Running at both idle and with a few programs running. |

105 degrees Celsius is the max temperature for your CPU. If it reaches that level, your computer will automatically shut down. http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=43529 If this is a desktop computer, I'd recommend keeping the CPU below 40 degrees Celsius on idle and below 50 degrees when running a few programs. If this is a notebook computer, I'd recommend keeping the CPU below 50 degrees on idle and 60 degrees when running a few programs. |

I'd say that running a processor at 90F-110F is the ideal temperature. My Core 2 Duo is running at 105F-115F with it's CPU running at about half. I'm also running Flash, about 15-25 other thing (including tabs) and chatting on Skype, and it's staying pretty cool. I'm running on an iMac 20" (previous generation). If you are in a tower, you should be able to reach cooler temperatures. Edit:(added 'F' after temps) |

for air cooling an ideal temperature would be to have the CPU at the same temperature as the rest of the room. |
