I have a Dell XPS 600 with about 1 gig of ddr2 ram, and I want to install a whole new complete system. I want to install Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and when ever it trys to copy files from the setup, it says: "Setup can not copy this file" for like about 7 files. The rest options are to skip the file, or to quit. My hard drive is already formated by gparted in Ubuntu live CD. My Windows XP Disk is very clean on the shiny side, and I dont know whats going on. I only have a windows xp disk with me.

Can someone help me with this? Thanks alot(!), Nick Hanson OutInDark in the chat room!

You know, Microsoft's windows has a partitioner and formatter in the installation disc. Try using that. booting into the cd first and there should be a screen like this to format and partition the drive. alt text

Yes, I have tried that, I even burned a ISO image and placed it on a cd. I tryed many ISO images and now, everytime i try a downloaded iso, it just says: Setup can not find ANY hard drives for windows xp. My legit copy of win xp says there is one. Thanks, Nick OutInDark in the chat room.

Are your hard drives on a controller card? If so (i.e. not on the motherboard), you may need to load drivers for setup to detect them.

Yes, they are. I have checked inside the computer its self. Nothing wrong. Should I flash my motherboard?

My suggestion-- get a Mac. By the time you are done spending money on fixing problems with your PC, all that money is enough to get a Mac most of the time.

I agree with Kevin to use the XP Setup function as he included in his post and the Setup function may format your entire HD. It will enable you to install XP MCE 2005.

If you didn't erase Dell's Hidden Partition, you can restore and/or reinstall the system from there. Otherwise, complete the install bypassing those 7 files ... you should be able to install those afterwards. Your Dell XPS motherboard may need jumpers enabled for installation, there might be some settings in bios as well.

Good luck.

If I remember correctly, you access the partition during the boot process. I think it's F11 or F12, then it will give the option of where to boot from?!
