So my current desktop is running XP and I've been thinking for a while about upgrading to Win7. Now, there is no reason that I need to do this, everything works fine. I'm just not sure if I should take the time to do it or just stick with XP. My laptop has Win7 and I like it pretty well, so idk what do you think?

Let me know what you think and/or what you would do.

Thanks!

Since you're using a desktop PC, I would recommend upgrading to Windows 7 from XP as you will notice very few compatibility issues related to external hardware (if any at all). Also, you will most likely notice the difference in speed, as Windows 7 generally allows for finer control of the programs and services that are running, allowing you to free up more memory (RAM), resulting in a noticeably faster machine.

Personally, I also find that I am much more efficient when it comes to carrying out everyday tasks on a machine running Windows 7 as opposed to a machine running XP, as the design of the OS is more suited to what I use a computer for, and in Windows 7 everything just seems much more accessible and intuitively designed compared to the the feel and design of Windows XP.

Thanks. You make good points, I have noticed I'm a bit more productive on my laptop at times.

Well, you will need to check if your hardware is supported in Windows 7. Also, your computer needs to meet the requirements for Windows 7.

It does. It would run win7 like a champ.

I figure that you should just wait to get a new computer because your going to spend 500 dollars on an OS and your computer will probably run noticeably slower. So I would get a new computer or wait to get a new computer (if you don't have the money to).

Well, I have a extra copy of Win7 so it's just a matter of installing it. My computer can handle it, I just don't know if I should do it.

Yah if you have the copy of windows 7 already I'd go for it. (But I'd keep a copy of windows xp handy just incase you change your mind, but think that you might like it depending on the specs of your computer)

Windows Seven is the overall better option. Might I also suggest getting familiar with Ubuntu or some other Linux distribution? Try it in a virtual machine. Ubuntu comes as a close second to OS X, but I'd prefer Windows Seven over Vista any day.

The answer to this question depends upon taste and hardware. If you're indifferent in regards to taste, then your choice should be decided by: Will Windows 7 take better advantage of my hardware than Windows XP?

The answer to this question depends on the date your machine was manufactured. If your machine is older than a couple of years, Windows 7 may run slower than Windows XP because Windows 7 was designed to take advantage of newer hardware. If your hardware was manufactured in the Windows Vista era (or afterwards), I'd say go for it! You'll likely notice a boost in speed in that case.

I would suggest you to switch to 7 as it's faster, nicer and has a better UI. Also the support for 7 increases and for XP decreases. Windows 7 should accept hardware decently. Be sure to check if the hardware is compatible with 7.

"support ... increases" is pretty deceptive. What sort of support?

(Jul 09 '10 at 16:40) Seb Seb's gravatar image

Use win 7 from xp because xp has some major issues and will never work with todays internet with out modding. On windows 7 how ever there are some bugs but they are worked out after time, and turn off uac (user account controls).

Windows 7.

Windows XP is my version of Vista [metaphorically]. Viruses are everywhere!
