my laptop only has three and theyre all used up atm. i wouldnt mind having five, but anything more than that i kind of unnecessary, unless you are running a lot of accessories with your computer

Most USB hubs will only juice up a certain number of devices anyway, due to power limitations. You wouldn't want to put 50 devices on a single hub, because that would place the hub under pressure both speed-wise and leccy-wise. 4 per hub is a good number. If you need more ports, get another hub (internal or external). They're cheap enough...
I don't even believe built-in USB ports are necessary, to be honest. You can get firewire (IEEE1394) to USB cables. I'd be extremely happy with 4 IEEE1394 ports instead of 4 USB ports, because 1394 is far more versatile. It can emulate ethernet too :)
