WTF!? 13 Suicide Attempts, 10 Successful in China iPhone Factory!

Will you continue to buy Apple, Inc. products if they are made by workers in dangerous working conditions?

alt text

Please don't change the question. I only used the China Factories as an example, so let me rephrase.

If Apple, Inc. products were made in sweat shops, by workers (significant child labor) putting in 12-hours/daily, 7-days/week, and compensated poorly ... Will you continue to buy Apple, Inc.?

HATE is such a strong word. I like & own some Apple, Inc. products & stock ... but I refuse to blindly follow the propaganda & hype that's excreted from the bowels of Apple, Inc.

Worth it ! sorry if this sound racist and slavery but is their choice to work for apple and to suicide themselves

If there are uneducated they don't have a choice. The Chinese government is very oppressive so I doubt they even care that this happened.

No, nobody is forcing Foxconn workers to commit suicide, Foxconn is a factory in China, highly supervised and very strict to make sure products come out good. Foxconn and Apple are two different companies. Foxconn is a major supplier for most US companies. So if you're going to stop buying from Apple, I guess you're going to have to stop buying from HP, Dell, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, the Amazon Kindle, and Cisco as well.

The Foxconn factories are extremely strict and have terrible working condition for terrible pay. It doesn't surprise me that this happened. There is also a story about a man that was working for 36 hours straight and at the end of his shift he came back to his dorm (which are located on the Foxconn facilities) and died. He was a young man with no medical problems but when you stress a persons body enough, bad stuff happens. This happened in the middle of all of the suicides too.

Foxconn can't stop them from saying "I quit!".

(Jul 09 '10 at 16:33) AppleHack23 AppleHack23's gravatar image

StigJensen I think you need to do some more research, both of those companies that you mentioned use Foxconn.

If I worked there I would jump out just to try the nets. Although the people on the second floor look like they could still break their legs.

With all that machinery in the factory there are plenty of other ways people could kill them selves more effectivly then jumping out a 3-4th story window. I vote for this was a publicity stunt to get people off there backs.

Why are so many people saying they don't care? That bothers me what if a factory in the U.S.A. was secretly working people like they do in China and workers committed scuicide because of that there would be an up roar. "But China they're from a different country so I don't care I just want my cheaply made crap." (sarcasm)

Yes. Western apathy can be appalling.

Not to diminish the lives lost, but this is kinda old news. Wikipedia has a page on the factory with a mention of the suicides and working conditions. It's not just Apple iProducts that are produced there, by the way -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn#Employee_suicides_and_deaths

For a study in statistics, however, this is the article you should read -- "Media gets its facts wrong - working at Foxconn significantly cuts suicide risk" (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/foremski/media-gets-its-facts-wrong-working-at-foxconn-significantly-cuts-suicide-risk/1356) which states:

Taiwanese-owned Foxconn has had seven suicides this year. That sounds like a lot, but the firm has an estimated 800,000 workers, more than 300,000 of them at a single plant in Shenzhen.

Although exact figures are hard to come by, even the most conservative estimate for China’s suicide rate is 14 per 100,000 per year (World Health Organization). In other words, Foxconn’s suicide epidemic is actually lower than China’s national average of suicides.

Working at Foxconn dramatically reduces people’s risk of suicide!

It's very sad that the world have come to this, and it's really sad to live in a world where a litte crappy "%" sign on a piece of paper have the power to kill people.

It's not just Foxconn or Apple in China. They have no public OH&S scheme there. Check this out:

The other pics didn't show up. Yes, that guy is using clingwrap for a facemask when he's angle grinding.

Other countries have different laws.

We can't force other countries to adopt our own legal standards.

I hope one day they're more enlightened.

Foxcon provides components to many computer companies.

Are you going to boycott the entire computer industry?!

Weather they have different customs or not there should be something done about people killing themselves. I do not approve of us running around shoving our western ideal on to people but some should be universal.

meh. I say it's not my problem and there's a lot more worry about in the us right now. Have you heard about the gulf lately? or are you going to find out about it in a month and ask people what they think about it on lockergnome?
