Answer to 1. and 2.: It depends how much you play video games, or whether or not you feel more comfortable using a dedicated gaming mouse/ gaming mouse pad. If you use your computer for purposes other than gaming, then you may be slowed down in your efforts to do anything else other than gaming, as everyday tasks that users use their computers for may not be suited to a gaming mouse pad.
Also, it depends what type of games you play. If you play racing games more often than others, you may be more suited to a racing wheel or similar peripheral. If you play flight simulator games, you may want a joystick, and if you play shooting games, you may want to look into a touch-screen trackpad or joystick designed for this specific purpose.
