I'm looking for a piece of software I can use to access my desktop PC while I'm away from home with my laptop. I would preferably like this software to be free. Any suggestions?

http://logmein.com is the best. The free version works on all OS except Linux/Linux Flavors.. You can control the computer via any OS though without downloading any software.

Logmein is great and there is a client for iPhone and iPad the iPad client is amazing, when sitting on the sofa I use logmein on iPad as a remote keyboard and mouse it works seamlessly!

Thanks for giving multiple solutions r0bErT4u. It's often difficult to tell what the questioner means by "best", and giving them multiple options is more likely to please the questioner.

I use the OpenVNC free edition. I use it because it is VNC so it will work with all operating systems that have a VNC client.

I use LogMeIn on Macs, but they work pretty well on Windows computers as well.

I like to use Team Viewer: link

it is free for private users and it only has to be installed on the controling pc (the other only needs the downloaded *.exe) AND their is an iPhone app (but i didn't test it).

I use teamviewer. link to the site. It is free to home users and is great for helping relative that live far away because they just download a small file and say the code over the phone to me.

Teamviewer is listed as free~ but does this refer to connecting to other PC's beside those you own? As in, helping a relative or friend?
