If I were to go for a new desktop computer right now, would you recommend, I buy or build a new machine, and why?

Doesn't necessarily have to be a major brand, could be built by a neighbor in his house or a shop instead of me.

See now, that says "brand name" no where did I say brand name, I didn't make it clear, it could be just as easily one built by a local shop.

Then the local shop is the brand. They just might be more subtle about it :) But your argument is valid, and thus no downvote/report/close.

That's true, though it's not a major brand. I wasn't even sure what I was going for when I wrote it, and then I saw the other question.

Yeah, unless you want to learn how to build a computer just go buy one it's much more easier! But..if you want to build it (for learning and experience), I recommand you this very interesting blog post serie from Jeff Atwood (a.k.a codinghorror):

Building a PC - Part I

Building a PC - Part II

Building a PC - Part III

Building a PC - Part IV

If you think you are able to I say build a computer, it can be quite fun and you know which hardware is going into you machine, you are able to pick the different features you want your machine to do and can make sure what hardware you are buying is decent.

I would recommend go and buy a machine that's already built. It won't cost as much and if your not experienced at building computers it may be hard.

I would recommend you build a computer, because you can choose which parts will go good with your computer, but if you don't want to go through many support (if needed) then just buy a computer

That is kind of hard to answer. because it depends what you want on a computer. If you can find a computer that has everything you want then just buy it. But you have look around and cant find a computer that has everything you want then build it how you want it.

If you feel up to the task build the computer. Because you know what is in it and knowing that it is also very customizable and upgradeable. So you can upgrade at anytime knowing that most of it will work.

Go Build, you have much more control over your machine, and it's that much more personal. I'ts the hardware you want running the OS and software you want. I always say go custom built, if you can.

If you are going to get an expensive PC then build as it works out cheaper, otherwise buy.
