I have a relatively old laptop that I very frequently use at home. The thing is that the batter no longer works and I feel the laptop is too old to buy a new battery for it, so I always use it having plugged to the wall. I tend to leave it on sleep mode at night and also leave the adapter plugged in. My question is, does this damage the laptop itself? Should I turn off the laptop after every time I use it? Should I always turn it off at night? Unplug the adapter when I turn it off? Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Sleep mode does cause wear and tear but it is so little that it will probably take like 50 years to kill it.

PS depending on the laptop model, you can generally get a laptop battery for $20 or less. ebay has many laptop batteries and I have used many of the ones from china with no problem. ($20 battery for an old dell inspirom laptop and it been running fine for the past 2 years with heavy use during the school days)

If you want your laptop to last long be sure to clean the heatsinks a few times a year.
