I get the impression that being defensive is considered not a good thing to do. Why is that? What is wrong with defending yourself verbally as long as you do not say bad things about someone else?

Ways "Being Defensive" isn't a Good Thing:

  • Hiding Something
  • Close Minded
  • Brain Washed
  • Prejudice

Some individuals/groups are uber close minded to the point that they refuse to admit when they're wrong.

  • Apple Fanbois
  • Democrats & Republicans
  • Muslims
  • Jehovah's Witnesses
  • Christian Fundamentalists
  • KKK & White Supremacists
  • NAACP Extremists
  • etc.

It depends. It's not always a bad thing. The answers above me are mostly true. Take this advice.

Being defensive isn't always a bad thing. Too much defense can come across as aggressive, though. People who defend themselves irrationally are denying themselves the opportunity to learn, being counterproductive, making their and others lives difficult, etc. The keyword there is rational. Be rational about (and polite when expressing) your defensiveness.

Because when your being very defensive usually means you're hiding something. You never want to be too defensive...

Because people want to control you. Stand up for yourself.

The following web site from MSNBC has an interesting take on how men and women have different feelings about being defensive.
