Umm, cd-r for $30? ? ? Is it gold plated? You'll be lucky to get $10 - $15 for a cd-r. Or did you mean a dvd burner? Of which you can pick up for around $25 -$30 brand new.

you can find a linux or windows disk boot to it and reformat it... if you are more paranoid scrub it. http://www.dban.org/download

if it still wont boot up then put it in another computer and do the same thing...

You could go to your local computer store and pay them to have it done.

If you want to securly wipe and make it almost impossible for someone to find it, try http://www.dban.org/. It wipes and rewrite it many times to protect it from accessing and recovering it. It can also be used with a flash drive http://www.pendrivelinux.com/install-dban-to-a-usb-flash-drive-using-windows/

Although the Linux(Ubuntu) option is your best choice. There's USB-IDE Adapter that sure would make this job easy. Besides, a Guy really should have one of these around anyway. It handles both laptop/desktop hard disc Interfaces & comes complete with a "12 & 5" Volt PSU(looks like a brick charger) However you still need a working PC(USB Port),but if you had one you could easily use a friends PC. Just plug into his USB Port & plug in the power adapter & format your hard-disc from within his Windows. Google Search (USB-IDE Adapter). Well Good Luck! X
