Hey there, I recently picked up a new imac as it was time to upgrade from my early 2008 black macbook. I'm currently running a dual screen set up on the imac(23in acer) for extra screen real-estate, how ever, I am still using the imac for email, skype, itunes, and a few other programs that I just dont need up on the main to monitors. My only complaint with this is that i'm forced to use the macbook keyboard and track pad as I don't have room for an 2 mice and keyboards on my desk. Is it some how possible to make the macbook act as a 3rd monitor, but still use it's own power, so I would be able to use my main keyboard/mouse to control both of the computers?

I would suggest giving Synergy a try. Install it on both, set the iMac to be the host, and set the Macbook as a guest.

This would let you use the iMac's keyboard/mouse to control both machines. It'll look like it's a three-monitor setup, except the macbook would have it's own dock/menu.

There may be another app that's specifically designed for OS X, but I'm not aware of it.

There is actually a Mac native alternative with a very easy to use GUI interface called Teleport. The downside however, is that it's Mac only unlike Synergy. Other than that it's fairly nice and unlike Synergy has much better pasteboard synchronization and even drag and drop between Macs.

If you are only using Mac OS X, I would try Teleport. it's a free application that allows you to use a single mouse and keyboard across multiple Macs, and has synchronous features such as copy and pasting to the clipboard, and dragging and dropping data such as files, urls, text, images, etc between Macs. It has a very nice user friendly GUI.

If you're running windows on one of the Macs, I would instead use Synergy, which doesn't have all the nice features of Teleport, but it's cross-platform.

MacBooks can only send video out, the only way you could see another computer with it would be through a remote connection over your network. If you have a bluetooth wireless keyboard & mouse you might be able to control multiple computers, but I'm not sure. You could also buy a KVM switch if they are usb keyboard & mouse. KVM
