Thoughts On An All Digital World?

Eventually the time will come when our world goes all-electronic, but that time is not now. Check back in several decades. ;) Personally, I am all-for electronic replacement of things in our world, but those replacements need to be as easy, or easier, to use than what they replace. They also need to be just as reliable. It's like, Would you want a personal library full of books, or a Kindle. Kindle's cool, but physical books are actually nicer, in my opinion. I hope you get what I mean by all this. ;)

The oldest things are always the hardest to give up. Funny though, Computers and other tech supposed to make life easier, and yet we seem to have less time to ourselves than we did before computers.

Can't beat the physical items of CD cases, game boxes with manuals and books with covers.

I've downloaded some mp3's and digital games, but it's just not the same.

Digital is ok for a backup copy.

I think we are cutting down far too many trees so the idea of not having paper is a great idea. I've lost count of the amount of times i've found I have useless paper just lying around or cluttering my desk.

But I still love the physical, tactile feel of a book that may have not cost that much so the loss of that item may not be a big deal.

I think newspapers will be the first to go as so many people get their news off the Internet these days.

I must admit that although I like holding media, I never miss it when I download a film or get an application off the internet. I think what I like most is the event of getting media and then being able to open it, look at the packaging and then use it.

However, being able to buy and get the same media digital straight to my TV or from a click on the internet is a lot easier.

Such as, I love supporting local shops but for convenience I simply go on the internet for said item.

Digital media is convenient, hard drive space is so cheap and TVs can stream from computers. Just as people had to give up records, 8 track players and VHS tapes, so will people have to give up physical media in the future.

When selling physical media stops becoming economically profitable or resources run dry then people will continue to sell physical items. At the moment the digital versions of media are simply and extra revenue thread.

The human condition is to dislike change, but if you are born into a world without physical newspapers, books, cds and DVDs then would you miss them or see them as a waste of resources and extra un-needed clutter?
