My wife and I are having our first child, she is 10 weeks along as of yesterday. Please list your favorite names and so long as they meet the sniff test, we're down.

EDIT: we have found out the baby is a Girl. We have lots of names but nothing definitive yet. Here is the FB group I started. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=105038982890170

Post it up and when she has the kid you guys can see who picked out his/her name for us.

Thanks, -Nerd

First of all, Wow! What an honor it is to name your child, let alone your first born!! Congrats!!!

. . .

If blessed with a son, I suggest the name, Robert.

The boy's name Robert r(o)-be-rt is pronounced RAH-bert. It is of Old German origin, and its meaning is "bright fame". A favorite name for boys since the Middle Ages. Especially favored by the Scots due to 14th-century king Robert the Bruce and to poet Robert Burns. Roberto is a Latin form of the name. Senator Robert Kennedy; poet Robert Burns; actors Robert DeNiro, Robert Duvall, Rob Schneider; author Robert Lawson; General Robert E. Lee; author Robert Ludlum; baseball players Roberto Alomar, Roberto Clemente.

Robert is a very common first name for men (#3 out of 1220) and also a very common last name for both men and women (#2533 out of 88799). (1990 U.S. Census)

Baby Name Popularity Trend for the boy name : Robert

. . .

If blessed with a daughter, I offer the name, Eleanor.

The girl's name Eleanor e-lea-nor is pronounced EL-a-nor. It is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "sun ray, shining light". Variant of Helen. Also possibly from the Greek name "eleos" meaning "compassion", or from German "ali" meaning "other, foreign". History: Eleanor of Aquitaine (12th century) was heiress to a large part of France, wife of two kings and mother of two more (Richard the Lionhearted and John). Her powerful personality, intelligence, and energy made her unique then. Literary: Jane Austen's Eleonora Dashwood in "Sense and Sensibility". First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt; Italian actress Eleonora Duse; actress Elinor Donahue; women's rights activist Eleanor Smeal.

Eleanor is a very common first name for women (#148 out of 4276) but an uncommon last name for both men and women. (1990 U.S. Census)

Baby Name Popularity Trend for the girl name : Eleanor

. . .

I'm honored for the chance to name your child, but I feel that YOU, the PARENTS should name YOUR child. Choose wisely. The name you decide upon may influence their growing up. If you select a girl | feminine name for the boy, he may be teased growing up, etc. Again, congrats on having your first baby. I pray your child grows up to make you, the Parents, proud =0p...

My daughter's name is Sara, but if you want names that have some ties to "geekdom" you could always go with these names of gals from Star Trek:

  • Kira
  • Nerys
  • Belanna
  • Kathryn
  • Deanna
  • Beverly
  • Keiko etc.

Just avoid Guinan... it sounds too much like gynecology.

My wife and I both like Star Trek too so that may work out. We've got lots of time.

Then name it after the character that most exhibits the attributes you admire.

If it's a girl, you can name her Charlotte. If it's a boy, you could name him Mark.

OK, it has been about 29 weeks since we found out that we were having our first child. We have officially chosen the name for our daughter. Unfortunately, I can not share it until she is born.. :0) We have family eyes prying even on here. lol
