UPDATE: White iPhone 4 Kits Bring Teen $130K & Threats > http://bit.ly/d6Gppv

A 17-year-old in New York City who bought parts from China to make white iPhone 4 conversion kits has made a pile of money… and a potentially dangerous enemy. Fei Lam, a high school senior from Queens, says he's gotten a threatening letter from a private investigator accusing him of selling stolen goods, and thinks it sounds a lot like the legal threats Apple made against the kid who found/stole the iPhone 4 test unit back in April.

Lam - like many iPhone users - was tired of waiting for the white iPhone 4. But unlike many iPhone users in the US, he speaks fluent Mandarin and has contacts at Apple's manufacturer in China. Working through "a guy from a few years back that had somewhat of a relationship with folks in Foxconn," Lam was able to get what he claims are authentic iPhone 4 white screens, digitizers, bezels, home buttons and case backs. He started repacking and shipping the kits from his parents' house, but was losing money on the deal until he...Read More

What's so special about the WHITE iPhone 4? IT'S A F@#$'n COLOR!! The iPhone 4 is the most fragile piece of excrement that MILLIONS of brainwashed lemmings bought! NOT listening to the flaws being reported, when the TRUTH is staring them in the face. Apple, Inc. can do no wrong in their eyes, and will accept a FREE bumper (that costs pennies to make) as a resolution.

Nothing, it is the same as the black one. Supposedly the reason it's been delayed is because the company that makes them is having a problem with the paint.

The constant anti-Apple drumbeat grows old, Robert. It's no less annoying that the constant "Apple is king" drumbeat you and others so often rail against. Really, enough. It's just a phone.

ageekmom,

Agreed. It's just a phone.

Technically neither white or black are even "colors" in the light spectrum. So, there really isn't anything different about them. White is a combination of all the colors in the spectrum and black is void of all color.

The moment it hits the VZW network I'll grab an iPhone to play with on my last free line. But, that'd probably the extent of it. I prefer pushed email vs. POP3 or IMAP email so I'd never give up my Blackberry as my primary mobile device.

The iPhone supports emailing pushing. It just depends on your email provided if they have that feature or not. So far, as of what I know, Yahoo!, Gmail, and MobileMe support push.

This white iPhone 4 is different amongst all the older previous white models on other generations the front still had a black finish on the top and bottom bezel whereas this newer iPhone 4 every part is white (well excluding the antenna bands around the iPhone 4.)

It won't be all white when the screen is off. it will be a black screen like the other iPhones. If they could make the screen turn white when it's off, then I would be impressed and understand why it's difficult to make.

It looks soooooooooo sexy :)

Still not gonna get it though, simply because of AT&T. If it came to a more fabulous network, like U.S. Cellular (#5 cell provider below AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint, and it is way less appreciated than it should be...), I'd totally get it, even if it still has the antenna issue. Who really makes phone calls constantly anyway? And who wouldn't put it in a case?

Still though, they should do a redesign and then provide a refund for these folks who bought it early.

The white iPhone has a special process that it has to go through to get it to look white. That is because it is a piece of glass that has to get coated white. So don't blame apple blame the precess that it takes to turn them white. Right now Apple is trying to figure out the least cost way of making them.

Again remember that the phone is now basically glass besides the metal band the whole thing is glass so it is fragile.

No its not about money, it's about the paint looking different on each device. One might be whiter than another.

How did you resolve the screen display separation issue?

Well, what I can see now, is it's not a defect, more of a feature. On older iPhones, you saw a seal between the glass and the bezel. That wa there so the glass could move around a bit to resist pressure from drops. Since there is ni bezel on the iPhone 4, and no seal, most likely it is purposely a little bit lose to resist pressure from drops. It's on both slates of glass as well.

There is nothing 'special' in terms of the phone itself... the lust factor certainly has been amplified for fanbois....

In relation to the iPhone 4 being a problematic p.o.s r0bErT4u - I have to say I have really enjoyed owning mine.

No reception issues, no fragility issues - have dropped it a few times on hard surfaces where I thought 'yep - thats it, its smashed', and had not a mark on it.

Lesson to be learnt: Don't believe the hype - whether it be from Apple or the Media. Make your own judgements.

Uelogy,

The iPhone 4 is amazing, but it had a rough start {Maybe released before it was ready?!?}. WHITE iPhone Conversion Kits take about an hour to do, so apparently --- Apple lied. Now, they're picking on a 17 year old >=0\

Yeh I agree the delay/lack of white models and the bs surrounding it is incredible. Though I wonder about the legality of selling/profiting from parts made by apple without a license to sell them etc

Although he is a kid - doesn't mean he can break the law.

But yeah I was thinking about that myself the other day - in the future, looking back the iPhone 4 will be a confusing piece of Apple history.

~ I think Apple should hire this 17 year old whiz kid. He managed to do what Apple didn't do. I can only imagine what the future olds for this business minded teen.

From what the reports are saying is he bought the white shells from an insider working at the Apple factory.

Although officially Foxxcon are denying the link, I find it highly unlikely that the kid made the glass cases himself and highly likely he has a connection swiping the parts and selling them.

Apple has made white iphones - Stephen Fry showed one off that he had on stage in public, so its not that they don't exist, or unable to be produced - its that Apple is not allowing it for sale.
