Do Air Bags do more harm than good?

I been doing study on the net about Airbags some say it saves lives other say it takes lives. I seen a guy crash into a telephone pole near my house once and the Air bag ripped the skin off his face he was rushed to the hospital so I did see it do harm. I heard both sides to Airbags I personally think that they do more harm than good and should be band from cars. I want to get all the facts I can on this subject. So what do you think of Air Bags?

I gladly paid extra for my vehicle precisely to get additional airbags (side curtain airbags in a small SUV.) Banned from vehicles? That's crazy talk.

Like everything, I am certain there are instances where a person is injured by an airbag who might otherwise have been better off without the airbag deploying. That said, unless an airbag paralyzes or kills a person who wasn't otherwise going to be paralyzed or killed in the accident, I'd err on the side of airbags every time. Why? In a severe crash, an airbag can save your life (or the life of your loved ones) and sometimes it also prevents paralysis or brain damage and other critical injuries. I'd rather be alive and/or able to move yet have some burns or other (comparatively) minor injuries than be dead or paralyzed.

It's always better to have to call a plastic surgeon into the ER than a brain surgeon...

well....slamming your had on the steering wheel in a 60mph crash i a lot worse than skin cuts.....airbags save thousands of lives each year...without out them...even a crash a 25 miles an hour could result in very Serious head trauma.....think about it...and banned from cars?!?! thats terrible!! yes poeple can get injured from airbags..but it also prevents from more serious injury or death

I think a good fast locking set belt works better it would keep a face out of the steering wheel but the downfall of the fast locking seatbelt is whiplash but does work way better than Airbags I think.

but in a high speed crash..the neck would snap forward..like you said..in could result in spinal injury.. paralysis..even death...thets alot worse then anything an airbag will give you

The seatbelt works in tandem with the airbag, to ensure the person's body is in the right position when the airbag is fully deployed. It's not an either-or proposition, in my view. In fact, I'd wager some of the people worst injured "by" an airbag were actually not wearing their seatbelt, which is both illegal (in the USA for drivers & front seat passengers) and ill-advised.

I been in a few crashed my self none of them with Airbags I only drive cars from the 80s newest car I own is a 1987 runs good I had a 1982 and 1985 I recked both of them no Air bags and I don't know the out come of those reck with Airbag. I got ok find just shaken up a bit but I was fine. I can see how the side Air Bags protect you but I don't like the ones infront of me the idea of it bothers me especially when I seen that guys face after Air Bag ripped his skin off.

how bad was the crash? and would you rather have skin damage or head trauma (or death)

I think it really just depends on what the circumstances are. I've been in incidents where the car hits a brick wall at 20MPH and the airbag goes off and broke my nose. If they wouldn't have gone off, we wouldn't have been hurt at all. But in the same sense, if you hut something going 60MPH, an airbag is better than the steering wheel or the window.
