alt text A Fallout Shelter is an enclosed space specially designed to protect occupants from radioactive debris or fallout resulting from a nuclear explosion. Many such shelters were constructed as civil defense measures during the Cold War.

During a nuclear explosion, matter vaporized in the resulting fireball is exposed to neutrons from the explosion, absorbs them, and becomes radioactive. When this material condenses in the rain, it forms dust and light sandy materials that resembles ground pumice. The fallout emits alpha and beta particles, as well as gamma rays. Much of this highly radioactive material then falls to earth, subjecting anything within the line of sight to radiation, a significant hazard. A fallout shelter is designed to allow its occupants to minimize exposure to harmful fallout until radioactivity has decayed to a safer level.

The fallout shelters of Greenlake

Did you know that Green Lake houses at least three old fallout shelters?

I know of several fallout shelters in the Greater Seattle Area & Eastside (Microsoft Campuses & Downtown Bellevue).

All residential and industrial buildings here in Israel are required by law to have bomb shelters. Most double as meeting rooms, playrooms and home offices. There are also community shelters every couple of blocks in the towns and cities. So my distance to a bomb shelter (when I'm not out in the wilds) is probably a couple of minutes.

My high-rise apartment has a standard extra room with specially reinforced walls, windows and door. It's also sealable in case of chemical attack.

The law was passed back in 1951, and unfortunately, the shelters have had to be used many times, both on the country's borders, and when Iranian Scud missiles rained down on Tel Aviv during the 1991 Gulf War. Then there was extensive property damage and whole buildings were leveled, but there were "only" three deaths (although many were injured).

Needless to say, we also have air raid sirens and a very efficient gas mask distribution process.

I live in a very rural town, I don't think we have any fallout shelters anywhere near, I'll have to build one I guess.

It's about 52.8 miles away. I have to go to the biggest city in the state to find one of the few fallout shelters here.
