The apple mac is a amazing piece of hardware, so how would you state your feelings about it in just one word.

Over-Hyped. Mac is nice, but nothing is without flaws.

Arrogance.

The arrogance is what perturbs me. A company can be proud of it's products without an aura of haughty arrogance.

"Ignorance," "Arrogance," or maybe "Cult"

More accurately, I'd say "Form over function," but that's 3 words.

Those are all fitting words, each could apply in some way yet not all as that is not fair.

(Jul 27 '10 at 14:46) Xiro Xiro's gravatar image

I don't know about that. I can pretty easily string them all together.

"An arrogant cult who ignorantly worship products that all value form over function"

hehe...

(Jul 27 '10 at 14:59) Leapo Leapo's gravatar image

I am trying to be fair with what I type out now when it comes to thoughts I may sound a bit more annoyed as every counter point one brings up is shot down as not being relevant, something I have noticed over time when it comes to Mac and Windows based PCs.

(Jul 27 '10 at 15:08) Xiro Xiro's gravatar image

overpriced (while the market has accepted the price point, I feel it is not worth it because I can build a PC with more features and faster hardware for less money)

They work ok and if they made released a PC version, I would switch when microsoft ends support for windows xp. As it is now, I am not willing to spend so much on a computer with less hardware features and slower.

Apple doesn't need to support everything, just a few modern AMD and intel chipsets

When Apple was trying to come back in 1997-98, they needed to figure out who they were, they needed a message that truly expressed this. They hired a 3rd party advertising firm, TBWAChiatDay, who brought on Ken Segall. Segall had worked with many companies from IBM, AT&T, Intel, and later Dell. He noticed something about Apple, a uniqueness, doing things in ways others just didn't, the thought process was not like the rest of the industry. He soon came to a conclusion, finding a single word that truly expressed Apple: Different. This essentually lead to the campaign "Think Different", which Steve Jobs has been quoted as saying it was more directed to Apple itself than to customers. "Apple had to remember who Apple was" he would say.

"Dell and Apple: It’s night and day, It’s a transactional world Dell lives in. It’s all about numbers. Everything they say about Apple making products for themselves is true. Apple — it’s about changing the world. For everyone else, it’s about the money.” - Ken Segall, 2009, after getting hired by Dell.

So in one word Apple is "Different"

CHOICE.

Why do people put so much time and effort into championing or complaining about a COMPUTER BRAND. Are people really that brand-obsessed? Is it cool to talk about vehicle manufacturers the same way? "I can't believe you drive a Ford/Chevrolet/Toyota/etc... what an unreliable/overhyped/overpriced/etc. vehicle!" (Answer: No, it's just as annoying...)

Buy what you can and what you want and enjoy it. Enjoying it can include telling folks what you have but the knowledge has to dawn on you at some point that everyone else is going to do their own thing. That's the wonder of having choices -- you don't owe anyone an apology or explanation for buying whatever you buy (unless someone else is paying the bills.)

Insulting.

Apple strives to make their user interfaces as friendly as possible. I feel that in the process, we lose a degree of "connection" with the computer.

The same could be said of how Windows has evolved. The general trend in computing is toward accessibility. If I asked the average computer user to explain what a batch file, fossil driver or init string were their eyes would glaze over.
