I've asked myself the same question you can buy a new computer for the same price.

But a new computer without software, won't do anything.

After looking at those pictures. Tell me how you can ask why people have Photoshop. It's such a powerfully extensive graphics program. You can do so much with it.

There are "light" versions of Photoshop, many of which are bundled free of charge with various devices (digital cameras, usually.) I only recently purchased Photoshop on the Mac side; I've gone over a year only running Gimp (a free Photoshop-esque app for OS X) and on the PC side I still run an older version of Photoshop CE.

I'm a fan of Lightroom, as well.

The short answer to why "everyone" has it is because of how long it's been on the market. Adobe Photoshop has been in existence since 1990.

Gimp can also be used on the windows platform - http://www.gimp.org/windows/

it is the best photo editing package out there. it can also do more than photo editing straight up.

the saying is you get what you pay for... you pay 700 bucks you get damn good software, you dont pay anything for it (gimp) you dont get as nice of a package

There are things called torrents my friend. Don't deny it, we've all done it at one point, but some of us would rather rebel by not supporting it, and that's why I don't have it.

There is also a trial version of the software :)

it is also easier to use than gimp when you get used to it, it also gives you much more control over the images

I was going to do with Torrents as well, because EVERYONE that I talk to seems to have it and we know some of these people do not have $700+ for it. I have GIMP and that will have to do for now and all I really need. Photoshop is not something I even need that much at this time.

Trail is possible for a short amount of time, I am using a trail of Sketchbook Pro and looking for a free program like it and so far nothing that is as smooth.

if your school has a graphic design course, you can probably bet the professor for a activation for photoshop. then all you need to do is activate the trial with the activation code your professor gives you. schools are generally able to get a hold of a large volume of coded for professional apps.

Ah, yes true, I know there can be good discounts for students as well. I do know a lot of people just grab it from the web as well.

(Jul 30 '10 at 05:19) Xiro Xiro's gravatar image

The scholastic discount is probably the easiest and quickest way to get a license free or cheap - my school provides licences that are usable even after you finish your education for Photoshop, among other softwares. Personally, I have never needed more than The Gimp provides - heck, Picnik usually does the trick for my photo editing needs.

Photoshop Elements does everything I need and it is much cheaper. Some computers come with it pre-installed for free like mine.

Adobe Photoshop has been around for many, many years now so over time market penetration will increase. Also Adobe have introduced 'consumer' packages, namely Adobe Photoshop Elements, which has been extremely successful and is fantastic for beginners.

I also believe Dell have it as an install option as part of their customisation process of the systems that they sell.

Well, for one, it's way more than just photo editing. I'm not sure which version you use, or what your skill level is but I do things in photoshop that have nothing to do with a picture taken on a camera.

While it is expensive, everyone has already detailed how to get it for the cheap. Trial version, slimmed down versions, etc. Honestly, not everyone has it either it just seems like that when you're talking to a specific group of people.

Photoshop right now is considered the industry standard, it's used in many business and looks good on a graphic designer's resume.

It's also very powerful piece of software, there's quite a lot you can do with it and it comes with a pretty decent UI. I wouldn't want to work on anything else. (and yes, I've tried GIMP)

It's not "just photo editing". It's more than that. A LOT more. You can create graphics with it, manipulate photos to the point where you can create a totally different image. Photoshop doesn't even have a limit to what you can do with it. "Just photo editing" is an insult to the name, let alone the software.
