I have been having on-and-off audio problems with my Compaq Presario F762NR Notebook PC in the past week. Sometimes, my notification tray will say:

  • "No audio output device is installed"

Other times it will say that the device is working perfectly, but I hear no sound.

I've googled many solutions:

  • Microsoft Fix It
  • Restarting the computer
  • Restarting "Windows Audio" in Services
  • Reinstalling the driver
  • Updating the driver
  • Everything related to audio in HP Help and Support
  • Even updating the BIOS

They have all helped for a few hours before I'm back with no sound.

Does anyone have solutions that will fix this permanently?

Can you remember if and what you installed just before this started happening? It may be conflicting with your audio drivers. See if you can Sys Restore back to that date.

I haven't installed anything in the past month other than said programs trying to fix the problem.

Is is possible that it could be some sort of virus?

I'm wondering because it's been on-and-off and it's really getting to me.
