I was at the Grand Canyon recently and every license plate I saw on a car from California I noticed began with the number "6". This was about 20 cars. Then when we went to our hotel I saw some more with 6 and a few with 5. Is there any pattern or was it just a weird coincidence?

Passenger cars in california are of the form

NLLLNNN where N is a number and L is a letter. They are issued chronologically and not reused. My 1985 plate was something like 1NWC555. My 2002 car was like 4XOG123. My 2009 car was like 6FGF655

Long ago they were LLL NNN and before that NNN LLL.

maybe that is just the way they are made in california unless you pay for a custom one. it might be like car 600000 then 600001 and it keeps going.
