What happened to "Second Life"? Why do you think "Second Life" didn't break through? When it was launched I thought it would become huge....but it never really did.

Its funny that users are so quick to bash something just because they don't use it anymore, instead of just looking at the numbers. The truth is that SecondLife is growing by leaps and bounds and if you payed attention you would know that.

I find it interesting that people assume Second Life is only enjoyed by "computer types." I have been in SL for three years, have two business there (virtual world photography and a coffee house entertainment venue), have joined many groups, both social and for business, formed my own photography group, and met many people, some of whom are now real life friends. All this even though in Real Life I am a receptionist at a retirement community. Never did any IT jobs, never studied computer progamming, never played any MMPOG games. Oh...and I'm 56 years old. And female.

Maybe you are just not the right demographic for Second Life.

True, Beth-

Truth is, you either like SL & "get it" or you don't...I think it's really interesting & fun- been in it since beta testing, years ago. I'd like to play more, but time constraints prevent it. Glad there are others here that understand the allure.

I've been on Second Life for over two years and i've found that it has its moments. One day you could have the time of your life, roleplaying gor, or partying in a club, or stripping, and then the next all your friends could be offline and you could be bored, trying to find something to do. Like anything it has its faults, like a woman could have love handles, SL can be laggy, but with all the fun available on Second Life, surely it's worth going through a few hours of boredom, if you're bored on SL you can always go do something else in rl and come back to SL later... Its a great place to be, with friends, and people who can become virtual family members, and you can get married and have beautiful weddings. And to the people who say that its for "people who are addicted to porn", i don't think you have managed to experience SL for what it truly is. Granted, there are people who go there to have casual sex for a cheap thrill, but then what you haven't looked into is the fact that people get MARRIED on second life, because they come to enjoy the others persons company, and feel that when no one else understands, that one person does, be they virtual or not, and then they go on to make love, virtually, yes, but what's the difference when the feelings are there? Not to mention that real life relationships have come out of Second Life. When you get into a romantic relationship with another avatar on Second Life, you can look how you truly feel inside, what you think of yourself as, and you don't get judged for how fat you are or for having ginger hair, because that person sees who you are on the inside, not just your real life outside shell.

I thought it was pretty huge. I think it still has a large community. I launched it once and it lagged so much I stopped playing after 10 mins.

I started in SL a few years ago. Real life & an "other side of the world" move got it the way of my free time. I just reloaded it to Linux Mint, & was surprised how fast it runs (& I have terrible latency here).

It's a great game- very interesting, I think. Helps to have friends who also play. Also helps if you're interested in trying your hand at creating & possibly selling items. Many people make their actual livings selling virtual items to other players.

But Second Life never become mainstream like Facebook or World of Warcraft (eventhough they are different things)....but do you guys think Second Life is too geeky for most people or too hard to approach?

Facebook isn't in the same ballpark as SL- it's completely different. Likewise, WoW is an adventure/puzzle game where SL is not really that either...SL is an adult playground- for leisure, and a sandbox for creative people/programmer sorts. It's definitely not something you just jump right in & hit the ground running in. It helps, a LOT, to have a friend in-world to get you through the beginning bits of how to move, change, modify, get around. From there, it's only a matter of finding an interesting aspect (to you) to pursue.

Second Life is the only subscription I've kept up for the last six years or so without a break. It just draws you in.

It's a platform, and a complicated multilayered one. "SecondLife" will never "break through." But the communities and services that deploy on it will.
