Help communicating with iPad baseband! Experienced users/hackers only!

Hey, I'm trying to talk with the iPad baseband to do a few things, I'm trying to measure dBm directly from it, for one, and for two, I'm trying to send a text message from it. After I type minicom -w, or even just minicom, it comes up with the area which lets me know I'm in, but nothing I type will be displayed. Is this supposed to happen? By the way this is on a Jailbroken 3G iPad. I'm following directions from the iPhone wiki, under the baseband commands area, but this is confusing. Thanks for the help!
