Magnetic Phone Cases and Cell phone

What are the effects of magnetic closure from phone cases on cell phones they are holding? Specifically one with GPS capabilities or a digital compass. Are damages permanent. I had my Samsung wave in one and I'm afraid it may be damaged. I have swapped it out to a Velcro one.
