Okay. So I'm designing and building a desk, and here's what I want.
How would I accomplish these things? Like, what kind of paint/finish should I use as well as the type of wood? |

2 to 3 coats of black stain (not paint), then several coats of clear lacquer letting dry completly and sanding with 220grit or finer between coat should result in black desk that has a hard as nail finish. |

I nice heavy stain on the wood with a glossy finish, is what I'm guessing you're going for. Depending on the wood, the stain will be different. My recommendation for darker wood and stronger wood is red oak with a really dark finish. You can buy stainer, wood, and finishing coats at your nearest Home Hardware, or something similar. |

Keep in mind that if you use the desk surface instead of a mouse pad, a glossy surface will cause reduced tracking ability for both optical and laser mice (may not notice in normal use but gaming can cause the problem to show it's self. lighter colors are often easier on both optical and laser mice as it is hard for them to detect contrast between black and blacker. Remember advertised specs on a mouse are bared on ideal conditions (generally a randomly generated high contrast textured surface with spacing at the perfect size to strike a balance between elements in view and and the capabilities of the sensor on the mouse. A lighter colored surface (but not white) with darker lines such as wood grain or other textures will be good for both an optical and laser mouse. Ummm...okay....I just want to know how paint it the way I want.....I don't care about the mouse... in that case, what iscifitv posted will work for you. it will meet both needs. I have done it (with out the sand paper part) and it works. PS the stain stuff goes on dark and lightens up after drying (don't put too much in one go and do your best to put it on as evenly as possible) While you are looking to make it black, avoid darkening the desk to a point where you lose too much contrast. here is an example of the darkest you can go with out making the mouse act up (unless it is a cheap mouse) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3005/2689470945_e2c43be84b_o.jpg it is a black color but still has contrast in the textures. You can make it glossy but use a low gloss. ill get a mouse pad...i want the desk to be high gloss if you want high gloss then after staining to the darkness that you want, simply get some lacquer that will give you a high gloss finish then put a few coats on (multiple thin coats is better than few thick coats) how high gloss is it? do they have a pic of some wood with that on it? here is the effect i want...except i want it more glossy sry for the late reply but here is a example of the type of gloss you will get http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1763640&postcount=26 You can increase the gloss by adding more coats Pretty much all of the items that I have found are either rated semi gloss and gloss when you use gloss, the surface becomes shiny and you also get a added problem. glossy surfaces will show fingerprints. do a image search for lacquer gloss for more examples thats the effect im looking for.....how many coats of it do you put on?
