I recently bought a new laptop. So, I Have decided to turn my netbook into something that I will use at school. Im currently using the most stable version of ubuntu ( 10.04 ), but Ive been wondering if there is other applications/software that you would recommend installation besides what comes with ubuntu ( Openoffice, etc ). Can't Wait to see your answers! Josh |

I think Ubuntu is already feature packed either way but i always tend to add a few things to each distro I install. For example, on my netbook (MSI WIND U130, used for a mix of personal and school use) i have:
And that's about all I added really, other than TweetDeck which doesn't work at most schools. Oh, and welcome to Lockergnome.net :) |

http://edubuntu.org/ should give you some ideas. Also, don't overlook Ubuntu 1 (System > Preferences > Ubuntu 1 ). |
|
Dropbox and thats about all you need Ubuntu comes with almost everything you would need |
|
You signed up to say that? Ubuntu already comes with a full office suite |

I'd do VMware player or (sadly Oracle branded, I MISS YOU SUN!!!!!) VirtualBox (virtualbox.org) so you can test apps in ubuntu and other oses. I'd also go with Docky, Dropbox, and if you're bored often Nexuiz :) Wine is pretty cool too And DONT FORGET ubuntu-restricted-extras! hope it helps! |

Docky, VLC, and Chrome pretty much sum up the entirety of software that I would add to an Ubuntu machine. Though I rarely use it for much of anything any more. Ubuntu comes with just about everything you might need for basic computing, which is nice. |

Currently installed all of the suggestions above :). The only one I havn't installed is Chrome as Im a strong follower of opera. |

Zotero is awesome for research documentation, but you can't use it with Opera. I've been using Opera for many years, but I've added Firefox for Zotero and use Tomboy for notecards, sync'ing it with Ubuntu 1. |

Okay, I might just install firefox to test that out! Thanks for the recommendation. |
