I have recently been using AVG free but I think that I could get a better free antivirus solution, do you know of any?

I think AVG free is the best one out there at the moment, so I think your pretty secure. If you want another one to try just google "Avast!", it has a friendlier user interface but it can lag down your computer a bit.

Either Microsoft Security Essentials, or Avast Antivirus.
For a highly extensive overview of currently available antiviruses, see AV Comparatives report for May 2010: http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/ondret/avc_report26.pdf
All the statistics you could ever possibly want to know are in there. It can be a bit overwhelming, but you can check out their conclusions if you scroll straight to the bottom.

Currently use avast. It works well and uses less resources compared to AVG
(I currently have the scanner disabled and all startup items removed so the scanner is basically an on demand scanner in which I update before each use)

As per my experience Microsoft Security and Immunet are very good antivirus software.
Immunet Antivirus http://www.immunet.com/main/index.html
Microsoft Security Essential http://download.cnet.com/Microsoft-Security-Essentials/3000-2239_4-10969260.html
