If people are innocent until proven guilty, why do the police stop looking for a criminal once an arrest has been made even if a court case has not taken place yet?

If you handled law enforcement and an "innocent" person was arrested, would you stop looking for the criminal?

I always wondered this because it is constantly seen on the news and even on TV shows it is like society has completely accepted it without question.

The unfortunate fact is that nobody adheres to the "innocent until proven guilty" stance, at least not in the proper way. Once you have been arrested, you are no longer considered innocent. You may still be "Not Guilty" but you are not innocent. Everyone involved immediately treats you like you are the actual criminal involved, whether you are or not. People are inherently vengeful. As long as blood is spilled, they are happy, and the courts reflect this.

Granted, there are a few good people left in the judicial system, a few judges, a few policemen, even a few lawyers, but the majority is too far gone. We've gone back to the original judicial system, where the ruling gangs were the police and witch hunts were encouraged. It wouldn't surprise me any if judges were paid by how many cases they put somebody away. If we don't have it yet, we're not far from it.

The fact of the matter is that the current way the corrupt system is setup, "YOU ARE GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT" Many of my friends in police enforcement tell me that now the way the system works, because people are so likely to jump bail or do other criminal behavior do to VERY POOR UPBRINGING, is that they assume you will do something wrong if you did not already so they keep you incarcerated till proven innocent.

Side note is that most of my police friends tell me that once they have who the Chief thinks is guilty they stop trying to look at any other people that may be guilty even if they themselves know the person that they have is innocent.

Your best position to be in is to always have an unbreakable alibi so you can prove you are innocent and then if falsely arrested file criminal charges against the officer and all else involved. A couple of times that the police end up paying for their mistakes they learn to be more careful and correct.

If the charge is serious enough yes, you stay in jail.

If police believe they have all the perpetrators, they stop looking. If they don't, they keep looking.

I am NOT of the opinion that most govt. is corrupt. I can understand why people think that way, but I believe the few mistaken prosecutions, etc. are played up so much, we believe it's the majority when it's NOT.

Because our ass-tasic government decided that the constitution and everything that paved the way for a great country doesn't matter any more. No free speech anymore, guns are being taken away, it's just sad that our current government thinks they can ditch things that created a great country.

Innocent until proven guilty. Ha. If I were to go kill someone in my basement and a neighbor says that I did it, the cops can take me in. They don't have any proof that I'm guilty until they go in the basement and collect evidence that I did it. If they can't find any evidence, I'm still supposedly innocent.

Not the case with today's government. If someone were to do the above act, and the neighbor ratted them out, they'd pretty much be taken in and not have the rights of an "innocent" person.

Oh, and no, I'm not going to go kill someone in my basement. Just an example! :)

It's a theory, something that in an ideal civilization would be true. However, unfortunately, its not a typical practice in modern culture :(

The system seems more like "Guilty until proven innocent" or somewhere close to that, they can hold people in jail if they cannot afford bail until their trial, that really does not appear they are treating people like they are innocent. However many people are guilty beyond all reason and everyone knows it so it is not like they want someone like that running around until their trial. There are just a lot of false words and statements made that have little to do with how things are really done.
