I am planning on replacing my desktops old os with Ubuntu. I currently have vista on my desktop. I don't know if my hardware is compatible with it. How can I check? And how do I replace the OS? I have no Idea about how to do this so post anything that could help. I use ubuntu about every day at school. I like it allot. Thumbs up if you think I should do it.

Don't replace the os you will have lots of problems, and getting vista back may be a problem for you! Start off with a dual boot to try ubuntu out, you don't seem very savvy with Linux so you will deffo want to try it out before you install it as your primary operating system.

I hate Vista, but like Windows 7. I use snow leopard/windows 7(parallels desktop), linux mint 9, and xubuntu/xp pro (virtualbox). Linux is great for older computers that have a wired internet connection. The wireless drivers can be a problem for certain cards. You can use wine for windows programs and ndis wrapper for the drivers. I use Linux on my old laptops for surfing and downloading music/videos. You can run Linux in virtual box for free until you can install windows7 and you'll probably keep Linux too. Like any OS it takes time to learn the ropes. Youtube is a great source of knowledge both good and bad. It has the steps on how to burn a .iso disk and how to format your hard drive for what ever you want. Just do it.

Don't forget to back-up your data..... OS,music,videos,pictures,programs,drivers,etc.

Good luck. (I had far too much trouble with Ubuntu)

What is the main reason you wish to switch from Vista?

How much have you used Ubuntu?

I tried it five times and would rather buy Windows 7 then deal with Ubuntu again. (did buy Windows). I found it limited what I could do far too much. Imagine that depends what one wants to do.

Good luck getting it to run everything you want to use.

Only my desktop. I like windows 7 more, but I don't have money at the moment for that.

I see, that was me a few months ago and why I was trying Ubuntu because Windows was too costly at the moment for my budget. I went in with an open mind and once I was done all I can think is how anyone ever gets anything done with Linux, too limited for my needs, if on a budget there is not much you can do. Personally I would use Vista over Linux.

How old is your system? But there is some areas that you can find Windows 7 for a very low price. Try googling it.

How do you replace the OS? Either burn the os to a CD once you have downloaded it or use an application like unetbootin to make the image bootable from a flash drive.

Re-start the comp, load the cd or flash drive, follow the instructions, wait about 30 min and then u'll have ubuntu installed.

Just make sure if you do a custom disk setup that you need to mount the files drive @ / and you need to make a small swap partition of 1-2 gig, but the guided mode will probably sort that out for you.

The ubuntu installer is really slick.

Post installation the first thing I always do is set the root password by typing sudo passwd root but you should never need to use the root account.

I use Ubuntu as my main operating system for all of my laptops, because I have a couple of more options than I would with a lot of other computers. I recommend making a CD, and testing out Ubuntu to make sure that the basic things work like sound.

I like using Ubuntu. I prefer it over Vista. I think that if you are willing to switch, you are willing to get rid of Vista once and for all. I think that most operating systems are better than Vista (possibly even Windows 98).

You can find the system Requirements for Ubuntu here : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

That should help in finding out if it will run on your system.

EDIT : here is an Ubuntu wiki with loads of info : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide

Ubuntu is known to work with almost everything so you should be ok. But what you can do is get a Ubuntu Live CD. And load it up and see if everything works.

When you burn ubuntu to a cd and load it, it gives you an option to run it live without it ever touching your system. It will work just like it's installed but will never touch your hard drive.

If everything seems to work then you can click the install ubuntu icon on the desktop to install ubuntu to your hard drive.

Easy!

Thanks. I didn't know that. Now what do I burn to the CD?

(Aug 14 '10 at 23:15) Madison Tries Madison%20Tries's gravatar image

Personally, I think Vista or any other Windows OS just sucks compared to Ubuntu + Compiz Fusion :)

Go for Ubuntu, the LiveCD will show if there are any problems with the hardware and you can also just Google Ubuntu, your machine (the brand and name of your particular machine).

If you're using ubuntu in school then you won't have any trouble with compatibility issues with different file formats.

You should try out 10.10 since it's been released, it's more polished than 10.04.
