Luxeon star led needs

So, I was thinking how cool it would be if I could have 2 luxeon star leds behave like railroad lights. In other words, alternate between the two. However, I want it done with transistors and not the ol' 555 timer. If anyone knows how I would appreciate a schematic. By the way, I have two 1 watt, 3v leds. Thank you.
