I recommend buying a new car, and use part of that $6000 as a deposit. Less headaches in the long run.
In this economy, $6000 can buy you a very good used car. Just do your homework on the car : reviews, maintenance records, and get the CARFAX.

Toyota Corolla. I had one for 13 years (and sold it for a nice sum to a college student,) and the only thing I ever had to replace or repair (the former, in this case) was the alternator. One of those or a used Honda Accord or Honda Civic should serve you well.
