These days every motherboard has a build-in soundcard and most of them work fine. So, the question rose to me. Do I still need a soundcard and what is the benefit? Also, does creative still make the best soundcard or are there equal of better cards?

What do you need it for? Unless you are producing music( recording, mixing, ect..) you don't need a soundcard..

It was just an idea. I was surfing and I saw they still sell soundcards and so I asked myself that question.

Also depends on what your connecting it to. do you use for eg: 2.1, 5.1, 7.1 surround sound. Do you connect to an amplifier/home theatre? Or are you going through self powered speakers? Again, it depends on how your set up is. A sound card will still give you better sound quality as well as taking the pressure off your processor.

I have a 5.1 setup. A logitech x-540, I think. It's a 5.1 speaker set for pc only. Is the quality noticable better? and by taking pressure off my cpu, does that means it runs winamp or it runs the equalizer or something like that?
