I have ran CCleaner's registry cleaner feature on my desktop for about a year now sadly. I have stopped because my desktop have been very slow, apps are crashing on it, it is getting BSOD every once and a while, and I learned that it harms computers more then it helps. How can I fix this?

If you have the backups, use it. Before CCleaner registry cleans, it ask to save a backup.

I have many backups. But I don't know how to use them. And I am not completely sure which is the first.

Double click the file or right click and it will say merge it back into the registry.

After such a long term use, restoring a 1 year old backup or even multiple old ones could cause more harm than good as as programs update and other random changes, the registry keys for them also get changed, restoring a very old backup may ruin most of your programs.

your best bet now is to uninstall all motherboard/ chipset drivers, video drivers and any other drivers that you installed, then reinstall all of them with the latest versions

You have a good point. Should I just replace the OS with ubuntu, I was wanting to do that anyway.

if you are interested in ubuntu, I recommend you use wubi to install it that way you are not replacing your bootloader and you are not making lasting changes to your system, if you feel that you really like it and want to switch over completely then you can just do a actual install that replaces the bootloader (you may still want to dual boot with windows because there may be windows programs that you want to use (and wine doesn't work most of the time)

Your computer might have bad hardware. How many times did you use CCleaner? What type of programs are you using? Your probably using junk hardware too so that could cause the BSOD.

If you got your Registry backed up then merge them all.

You say that you got many backups of the registry from when you used the CCleaner, right? if you do then merge them all (Which means put it back into the registry)
