The consumer, free software for Windows and Mac OS 10 are Windows Live Movie Maker and iMovie (09) respectively. In terms of professional software, for Windows there's Adobe Premier Pro and Sony Vegas Pro (At least these are the more prevalent ones). For Mac OS 10 there's Final Cut and Adobe Premier Pro as well. I do believe there is a watered down version of Sont Vegas Pro that costs far less ($89 vs $600 I believe) that Sony sells, but it's name eludes me at the time. I might note that Sony's software is Windows only, where as Apple's software (Final Cut Studio) is Mac OS X only. Adobe's is cross platform. As for free software, iMovie is pretty cool, but can't do everything in the book. Same with Live Movie Maker (if you're using Vista or Xp, there's also another "Movie Maker" already installed).

Asked and answered. Why are we doing this again? - http://lockergnome.net/questions/3971/what-is-the-best-video-editing-software
And, Adobe CS5 Production Premium suite, If you don't have a PC, go get one. (Way better than a Mac for this, and significantly cheaper - Try buying 16-32 Gb or ram and a pair of 6 cores in a mac...)
For linux, Look at Kino. It works better than many, (including Vegas and win movie maker/imovie.)
As far as AVID and others that those (obviously NOT in the trade) say. there really is no industry standard, any real project has a dozen different apps often on three different platforms. But most everything at least uses Adobe after effects for part of it. - and @evilpundant, After Effects isn't a video editor, it's used for special effects generation...

64 bit: After Effects CS5 + Premiere Pro CS5 makes for an amazing editing solution that I prefer over FCP hands down 32 bit: After Effects CS4 + Premiere Pro CS4 Unfortunately Adobe doesn't want After Effects CS5 or Premiere Pro CS5 running on 32 bit Which I Can kind of understand Premiere Pro & After Effects CS(4 or 5) beat FCP no doubt

I know a few for Windows and possibly they are available for Mac... Adobe Premier... Adobe After Effects, Sony Vegas Pro... For n00b editing use the pre-installed Windows Movie Maker / Windows Live Movie Maker
I prefer to use Sony Vegas Pro

I use Sony Vegas 9 Pro and Camtasia Studio 7, Adobe Premiere and Avid are great too :p, if you are using Windows you should already have W. Movie maker witch is another great software to edit home videos and easy to use. If they are for youtube, they made a video editor builded in their website so go and check that out ^^
