I get the impression that being defensive is considered not a good thing to do. Why is that? What is wrong with defending yourself verbally as long as you do not say bad things about someone else?

Ways "Being Defensive" isn't a Good Thing:
Some individuals/groups are uber close minded to the point that they refuse to admit when they're wrong.

Being defensive isn't always a bad thing. Too much defense can come across as aggressive, though. People who defend themselves ir*rationally are denying themselves the opportunity to learn, being counterproductive, making their and others lives difficult, etc. The keyword there is rational*. Be rational about (and polite when expressing) your defensiveness.
