Sounds like you might have an infection when you turn on your computer tap F8 until a menu appears, select Safe mode with networking. Open your browser and go to http://www.superantispyware.com/ and download the portable version run it and remove anything it finds.

Then go to http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and download and update it do a quick scan and remove all detections.

After that go to http://www.lavasoft.com/ and download the freeware version of Ad-Aware update and scan remove anything detected.

Then go to http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html and download spybot update it and and scan, remove detections. (Turn off tea timer during install)

Then go to http://www.free-av.com/ and download Avira update and scan then remove any detections.

Now download Revo from http://www.revouninstaller.com/ and use it to remove all the above programs and download Microsoft security essentials from http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ install, update and use it for your main AV.

If your still having trouble come back.

I recommend getting a Linux distribution and putting it on your computer. You'll notice that it runs faster, and more securely. I prefer to use Ubuntu, but there are some other good ones out there as well. Believe me, Linux really made my life (and some of the people around my life) a lot easier (because some of my friends let me take their computers and fix it up).

apart from resorting to Linux, the other fixes regarding virus scans etc are a good idea. Also, if these do work (which is likely), then once you boot back into windows (normal or safe mode) make sure you turn System Restore off then reboot and then turn it back on. As System Restore does tend to have a snap-shot of the offending virus, so by turning SysRes off, you are deleting the restore points that have that infection. If you do prefer to stay with Windows and none of the above answers fix the problem, then you may need to re-install Windows. Good Luck

OK, you can try this. . . Start by d/ling Memtest from www.memtest.org and burn the image to cd. Reboot your computer (with Boot to Cd enabled) and run the test (could take a while). This will tell you if you have a hardware problem. If you receive any red bars with failing addresses displayed, then it is likely you'll need to replace your ram. GWScan512 from bit.ly/bqCQek (again burn the iso to cd) will let you know if you have a HDD problem. As you did not mention your version of Windows, I'll have to give a couple of suggestions. With XP - firsyl, boot from the XP cd and select "To set up Windows Xp now, press Enter". Agree with the EULA, press F8 to continue. Windows will check for previous installations and, after a moment it will display an option:"To repair the selected Windows XPinstallation, Press R". After pressing the R key windows setup will continue. From there, just follow the prompts. With Vista or 7 - Insert your Vista/7 dvd and boot from it. Choose your language etc. The next screen, you need to select "Repair your computer". You'll then see a few recovery options. Choosing Start-up repair will make windows setup look for and correct any file system corruptions and repair them.

did it take 10 minutes to start every time you started your computer? or was it just a one time thing. sounds like it could be a Windows error. but just in case, scan with MBAM (Malware Bytes) and Avast! both have free versions and i highly reccomend them. if all else fails, reinstall Windows.

Yes run both an anti-virus program and an anti-malware program. If both of those comeback clean than try to fragment your hard drive. Again if nothing faster happens than it is time to reinstall and you should quickly backup your files and reinstall.

Also next time listen to your computer, if it makes any weird noises then there is something wrong.
