I was wanting to do some work for a teacher but I am not quite sure how to do it. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to take a video from a VHS tape and burn it onto a DVD? I would appreciate any help.

I bought a stand alone unit, no computer needed.

You will need a device to record the analog video and digitize the video. The simplest way is a DVD recorder connected to a VCR or a DVD/VCR Dual Recorder.

Another way is to get a capture card, via coaxial or RCA cable to the computer and edit and burn it to a DVD.

Also some DV Camcorder with a RCA connector can take video in from the VCR and make it act as a capture card. For more info see http://www.videohelp.com/dvanalog. I bet if you don't want to buy any new hardware and have a DV camcorder, you will use this.

Unless there is no other way around this...you don't want to bother going from any analog format to digital. For instance...going from 288 lines of resolution with VHS to a DVD...you will not be happy with the results. Plus...being that any tape is going to be sequential...you're going to need to do the conversion in real time. Myself...I just go buy/rent the DVD and don't bother with this...since I all ready know I will hate what the results will be.

If there is no other way...the easiest way is to get an analog TV Tuner card with on-board MP2 encoding. One of the best...if you can find it would be a PVR-150/500 from Hauppauge. These are rather old...but usable...if you can find one. Another more up-to-date model would be the WinTV-HVR-1250 MC which goes for about $50 on Amazon.

The reason you don't want to use a TV Tuner card/video encoder without MP2 encoding on board (usually around the $20 range) is that after a couple of minutes...your video/audio will not be synced. Not only that...but you can also hook it up and use it as a DVR.

Get an easy cap audio/video to usb converter, it comes with software to record the video on your computer then you can burn that file to dvdr. http://www.amazon.com/Easycap-USB-Video-Capture-Adapter/dp/B001BWU8US

There are tutorials on youtube how to use this.
