Internet Explorer 9 uses hardware acceleration to utilize things like GPU power (etc.) to improve speed and rendering. Demos show IE9 platform preview to be faster than all other browsers in tests specifically designed to be very taxing on frame rate and other browser rendering abilities. Will Apple fight back by putting hardware acceleration into Safari?

They might, if their userbase shrinks, but other than that, they wont. Apple has been known to not add features even if there good overall, to their products, when they are created by of first used by other companies, unless it caused their bottom line to shrink.
