My mac sometimes doesnt get past the boot due to a flashing folder with a question mark

My mac sometimes doesnt get past the boot due to a flashing folder with a question mark but sometimes does... If i shut down the mac now and try and turn it on itll probably come up with the Q mark folder until i unplug it for a while so what is up with my mac? I need help, i also tried idefrag but nothing really changed.. All this seems to be happenning after dloading half life 2 from steam..

it kinda sounds like your harddrive is failing. i personally don't know any programs that could detect if it was failing or not. but i'm sure someone else does. or you could do some googling.

if i leave the machine unplugged for a while it turns on... but its still worrying
