For those of us with Android phones with front facing cameras and many many friends with iPhone 4's, it can get a little disappointing that even though we both have video calling capable devices, we can't video call because they use different programs. Like my mom has an EVO 4G, on Tuesday I'm getting the Epic 4G, and basically ALL my other friends have iPhone 4's. So is it possible an application could be created for Android to take advantage of Apple's open-standard FaceTime to enable video calls between the 2 platforms? Or is that something that's just not a possibility? |

I'm sure there will be an app on Android once the specs of FaceTime are released. The FaceTime standard itself is simply a group of standards combined into one. It uses h.264 with AAC for the video and audio media, it uses SIP for signaling the VoIP session, STUN, TURN and ICE for networks using NAT, Firewalls, and other forms of routing... and finally RTP and SRTP for streaming the media data itself. Apple eventually wants to make the standard open, and not just for phone to phone.. but any device. iOS 4.1 for example adds in the ability to use a person's Apple account or email address to FaceTime with them (possibly through something like iChat on a Mac or for iPod touch users). |
