A flamewar is anytime an online discussion degenerates into name-calling, insults, attacks and completely off topic remarks. It can involve as few as two people or a group of people using any computer-mediated form of communication (dialup Bulletin Board System like I started out with; Usenet newsgroup; web-based discussion forum, etc.

"Flaming (also known as bashing) is hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users."

Wikipedia: Flaming (Internet)

Edit: Sorry, I haven't seen a flame in one of the threads, or I'd link it in here.

No, I wasn't asking for actual flame wars, just any links to sites that define it such as you did

From Urban Dictionary "A flame war is a heated argument between two individuals, that results in those involved posting personal attacks on each other during or instead of debating the topic at hand." Urban Dictionary link

The great flame war of '99 happened when everyone and everything on the internet was mean. Everyone was trolls. So glad it's over but I will never forgive Usenet.
