Exactly! From a health and financial (healthcare costs & loss of productivity from work/school) perspective, many other things are far more detrimental to society than caffeine... sugar is high on that list (obesity, diabetes, tooth decay.) Legislating them doesn't stop abusers from over-indulging in them, anyway; it just gives the government another revenue stream thanks to the "sin tax" they'll apply to additional items beyond just cigarettes and alcohol.

No, but then I don't think that tobacco, alcohol, and other addictive drugs should be treated as they are in North America either.

God NO! I need my morning fix of caffeine, it wakes me up. If I wake up and don't have coffee, I feel sluggish all day, even after having food. So, a definite NO to making it illegal. I would rather give up smoking ciggies than give up my coffee. And by the way, caffeine is also an anti-oxident, much like Tea is.

Caffeine in small amounts is beneficial for the body but just like anything else too much of one thing is not a good thing.

No. Caffeine in the levels provided by coffee and tea are generally safe. There are those sensitive to caffeine who are able to self regulate if necessary. However on a majority, the levels of caffeine consumed via standard serves of coffee would not warrant government intervention - haha can you imagine how smug coffee drinkers would get if you had to be over an age, or hold a licence to drink caffeine.

I think that those who have a simple cup of coffee once in the morning and then maybe again at dinner deserve to have it. But I do think there are some who are addicted in a way that is unhealthy and they have many cups of coffee throughout the day. There is really no reason to make caffeine an illegal substance being that in small amounts it is a good thing.
