There is a Linux distrabution called puppy linux it runs fast because it stores its self in RAM and not the HDD. http://puppylinux.org/main/index.php?file=Overview%20and%20Getting%20Started.htm

Agreed. It's the fastest distro that I've tried, and I've tried a number of small ones, including DSL and featherlinux.

It was also the first distro to be capable of installing directly to a flash drive.

I don't like DSL, because of the name, but I prefer XFCE on ancient hardware, because it is one of the fastest desktop environment; exceeding Gnome, and far exceeding KDE in speed.

Puppy Linux is a 130mb iso download that you can boot it from a flash drive without ever needing to install it if you don't want to because it runs inside the memory. Yep, you guessed it, about 130mb. There is quite a lot pre-installed too so you can be browsing and working in minutes. Default browser does not support flash out of the box.

Use unetbootin to burn the iso to a flash drive.

Puppy does look a little old fashioned but it's perfectly fine for every day web browsing and work and you can set it up differently to make it prettier if you wish.
