Alright so my mom didn't actually say this, but she kinda gives me a face like it's the equivalent of me calling myself a nerd.

When I call myself a geek in front of people, they don't seem to understand what I mean. Some people misinterpret it for being the Hollywood stereotyped "I love school, reading books, doing homework and physically weak nerd".

I don't know. I'm just tired of people thinking Geek = Hollywoodized Nerd

**Although I did really well in High School, and most Geeks do, I certainly would not call myself a nerd...I personally think there's a difference.

I am proud to say I'm a Geek...anyone else get weird faces when they refer to them self as a Geek?

My Mom is not ashamed of me though...lol....don't think that...she is the most supportive person in my life. 8)

Ideally, your mom would support you in whatever you wanted to identify yourself as, assuming it wasn't self-destructive or illegal.

Anyway, when your mom hears you say "geek" she's probably replacing it with "nerd" in her head. Not that there's anything wrong with nerds, but most people don't self-identify as nerds. Geeks, however, tend to be proud of their geekiness -- it's celebrated as a positive trait/aspect of their personality.

I've been a geek my entire life and while high school sucked, the rest of my life has been awesome thus far; my geekiness has played been an important part in making that awesomeness possible.

ftw

Besides forget what anyone else thinks or says about who you are... as long as you are happy with how/who you are, thats all that matters... Cliche, but true.

Oh believe me....My mom is extremely proud of my doings. I have helped thousands of people open their eyes to how interesting computers are other than a Internet Browser program. I have changed many people's lives (they have told me themselves).

She supports me 100% in anything I do. 8)

Edited the run-on sentence. Better? If not, fix it, sans snark.

I am also very proud to call myself a geek, and after looking at ageekmom's diagram I have confirmed that I am a geek. I find that being a geek has helped me so far in life and will help me later on in life. And even though I don't care for Bill Gates too much, Rule #11 on his 11 rules of life is: "Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one." And I agree with this :) (Bill Gate's 11 Rules)
