I've just visited the student accommodation i'll be in for the next year and noticed that there is no wifi, only a etherent socket. I've got a old router handy and was wondering if it's possible to plug a router into the socket to make a wifi signal without DSL plugged in or if im just gonna have to sit in the same corner for the next year ? Any ideas? cheers in advanced.

the router will work if you plug it in, we have done it once at school, but you will need to make sure that it is confirmed to work proxy wise and anything if the school use any of that sort of security

Be careful - check the schools rules on their internet use etc, in case of any strict penalties etc,

I've heard some schools really don't like connecting wifi routers etc,

Ah, thanks for that, i'll check with whoever's in charge before hand, it's technically an independent company i think so hopefully they'll be a bit more relaxed about the whole thing if the network isn't being used for anything more important than browsing. Cheers though you've probably saved me form getting in trouble haha

Securing Wireless Router - Yahoo! Search Results: http://bit.ly/97NS1J

  • I Highly Recommend to Secure the Wireless Router
  • Don't Broadcast your SSID
  • Use Highest Security/Encryption Available
  • Lockdown Access via MAC
  • Etc.

Why not pick up a cheap wifi router and then plug that into the ethernet port and connect through the wifi router.

That was the plan, i just wasn't sure if a router needed a dsl connection to work or if ethernet would work on its own. Thanks for the answer btw :)

you could always use a cable router, they tend to be cheaper and better for the price

You need to make sure that your school doesn't use a proxy and if you don't want anyone to know that you have your router there make sure you turn off SSID broadcasting.

although turning of the ssid doesnt help that much, you can still find it on dedicated wifi scanners, only windows doesnt see it

yah but most people will just be looking for a broadcasting wireless network with WEP encryption that they can hack
